Life rarely unfolds exactly as we plan.
We carefully arrange our schedules, set goals, and imagine how events should take place.
Yet, despite our best efforts, an unexpected delay, a chance encounter, a sudden challenge, or
even a few words from a stranger can completely alter the course of our day, and sometimes
our life.
I was inspired to reflect on this subject while travelling in Chiang Mai this week on my
sacred journey, when two people I happened to meet shared some sobering news about their
lives.
One had recently lost his father, while the other had lost his job.
Although their circumstances were very different, both were searching for answers and
asking the same difficult question: Why is this happening to me?
Their stories stayed with me.
They reminded me that when life takes an unexpected turn, our first instinct is often to search
for an explanation.
We want to know why something happened, whether we could have prevented it, and what to
do next.
We may dismiss such moments as coincidences or unfortunate circumstances. But spiritual
wisdom teaches us that not every unexpected experience is meaningless.
Some may carry guidance, correction, protection, or reassurance.
They can be gentle reminders that the divine is always communicating with us, although not
necessarily in the way we expect.
The divine does not always speak through dramatic signs or miraculous events.
Sometimes the message arrives quietly through a person, an interruption, an unanswered
prayer, or a moment of beauty that causes us to pause.
A stranger may offer a kind word just when we are feeling discouraged. A casual
conversation may answer a question that has troubled us for weeks.
We may unexpectedly meet someone whose experience changes our perspective or directs us
towards a new opportunity.
Such encounters remind us that people can enter our lives for a reason, and they can lead to a
turning point.
Some remain for many years, while others appear only briefly. Yet even a short meeting can
leave behind an important lesson.
Nature, too, can teach us spiritual lessons.
A sunrise reminds us that darkness does not last forever. A tree standing firm through
changing seasons teaches endurance.
Rain may disrupt our plans, yet it also nourishes the earth and brings new life.
When we slow down and observe the natural world, we begin to recognise lessons in
patience, renewal, balance and acceptance.
Nature does not struggle against every change. It adjusts to life’s rhythm.
Challenges may carry the most difficult messages of all.
Losing an opportunity, experiencing illness, facing rejection, grieving the death of someone
we love or enduring a setback can initially feel overwhelming.
In those moments, it may be difficult to believe that anything meaningful can emerge from
the pain.
However, such experiences often force us to stop, reassess our priorities and discover
strengths that might otherwise have remained hidden.
A closed door may be protecting us from a path that is unsuitable.
A delay may be preparing us for better timing. A disappointment may redirect us towards
something more meaningful.
This does not mean that every painful experience should be romanticised or that suffering is
easy to understand.
Nor should we assume that every tragedy has a simple spiritual explanation.
It simply means that even within hardship, there may eventually be an opportunity for
growth, wisdom and spiritual maturity.
Sometimes the question may gradually change from “Why did this happen to me?” to “What
can this experience teach me, and how should I move forward?”
Then there are synchronicities, those curious coincidences that seem too perfectly timed to be
entirely random.
We think about someone and suddenly receive a call from that person.
We are considering an important decision and unexpectedly hear a conversation, encounter a
passage in a book or see a message that brings clarity.
Whether we call these moments divine guidance, intuition or meaningful coincidence, they
invite us to pay attention.
The unexpected often awakens us because routine can make us spiritually inattentive.
We become absorbed in work, remain in our comfort zone, and focus on responsibilities and
personal concerns.
A surprising event interrupts this state and brings us back to the present moment. It also
teaches humility.
We may plan carefully, but we cannot control every outcome.
Accepting this truth does not mean becoming passive. It means doing our best while
remaining open to the possibility that life may have another direction for us.
However, we must also exercise discernment.
Not every coincidence is a divine command, and not every obstacle warns us to abandon our
plans.
Genuine spiritual guidance generally brings greater clarity, responsibility, and inner peace,
not panic, obsession, or fear.
To recognise the lesson within an unexpected moment, we must first become still.
Instead of reacting immediately, pause and observe what has happened.
Ask yourself why the experience affected you so strongly and what it may be revealing about
your thoughts, relationships or direction in life.
Writing about the incident can also help. When we record an unexpected encounter and
revisit it later, its meaning may become clearer.
Patterns often emerge only with time.
Most importantly, trust your inner awareness.
Intuition is usually quiet and steady. It does not shout or frighten us. It gently directs our
attention towards something we may have overlooked.
Life is full of surprises, and some of its most insightful lessons arrive without warning.
A stranger’s kindness, a change of plans, a difficult test, a painful loss or a moment of
wonder in nature may all awaken us to something we had not previously understood.
The divine may not always remove uncertainty from our path.
Sometimes, it speaks through that very uncertainty.
So, the next time something unexpected happens, do not rush past it.
Pause, remain receptive and ask yourself: What is this moment trying to teach me?
